Four SPA members have won bursaries totalling £7,000 in a hotly-contested competition to study with one of the UK’s leading journalism trainee schemes.
The Badger’s Tom Powell snatched first place and a £3,000 scholarship, with Kettle Magazine’s Jess Wells bagging second and £2,000 towards her tuition fees.
Platform’s Sayuri Standing and Epigram editor Zaki Dogliani rounded off the winners list, each snagging a £1,000 prize.
Brighton Journalist Works, who ran the competition, said they were confident each of the four would be “star journalists”.
“All four of the winners were excellent, and it was really hard to choose between them,” BJW MD Paula O’Shea said.

“We are confident they will be star journalists in the future and we look forward to teaching them and seeing their careers develop.”
The joint SPA-BJW competition is expected to re-open again in January 2016, with the chance for even more budding journalists to win money off an NCTJ-accredited course.
