The blue tick that signifies Twitter verification may be far more common than it once was, but it remains a hugely useful way to help people find your publication’s social media presence. Not to mention that it is a fun thing to see next to your Twitter handle.

Many student newspapers have already become verified, including Exposé, The Mancunion and Concrete, so it is clearly possible to do it. For anyone who has done it already, you know what to do, but for everyone else here is how to get verified:

Things your profile must include

  • A bio, profile photo & header photo
  • Your publication’s website
  • A confirmed email address
  • A verified phone number

Things to include in the application form

  • At least two websites that prove your publication’s existence and significance. This can prove a bit of a stumbling block in the process. Most publications will have their website, but finding other websites to support the application can be difficult. If your university or student union has webpages about your publication, I recommend using those. If your publication has won an SPA award recently, you can also use list of winners from SPANC 2017. If you’ve been shortlisted for an award, the full shortlist page should also help.
  • Finally you’ll be asked to explain why your account should be verified. In this part of the process you should write concisely about the significance of your publication, your influence on the news agenda of your university and local area and any awards you have won.

Simple, right? Once all of the above is in order, you should be ready to submit your application to Twitter and hopefully join the ranks of verified student publications.
